If you live in Australia, chances are you know at least one person who has had a heart attack. Heart disease is the leading cause of death in Australia, accounting for nearly one in four deaths. In fact, according to the latest data by Heart Research Australia, each day 55 Australians suffer from a sudden cardiac arrest — and only 8% make it out alive.
For households with members with cardiovascular comorbidities like diabetes, hypertension, kidney problems, obesity, etc, every second counts if and when they fall into a sudden cardiac arrest. CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation) combined with early defibrillation is the most effective way to revive someone who has gone into cardiac arrest. For every minute that passes without CPR and defibrillation, the person’s chances of survival decrease by 10 percent. After 10 minutes, their chances of survival are pretty much zero. So, if you have a family member or friend who is at risk for cardiac arrest, it’s important to have a defibrillator at your disposal.
In general, sudden cardiac arrests that happen outside of hospitals only have a 12% survival rate, accounting for approximaely 22,000 annual deaths in Australia. That is why it is crucial for personal trainers and gyms to have portable defibrillators or AEDs (automated external defibrillators) always on the ready.
Bystander action involving quick administration of CPR within 3-5 minutes after collapse, coupled with the use of an AED, vastly increases the chance of survival for the affected individual — from 6% up to 74%.
