Defibrillation explained

Defibrillation, made simple enough for whoever gets there first

The unit decides whether a shock will help, then coaches the CPR either side of it.

ZOLL AED 3 fully automatic defibrillator, the unit Integrity HS supplies most often to workplaces.
The ZOLL AED 3, 2.5 kg, fully automatic, with audible feedback on every compression.

The word defibrillation usually reaches people second hand: a first aid course, a safety audit, a committee asking who is responsible if someone collapses in the warehouse. It sounds like something only an ambulance crew can do, and that puts buyers off asking the obvious questions. Integrity HS was founded by two intensive care paramedics, so here is the plain version, followed by the two units we are asked about most.

What is defibrillation?

Defibrillation is a controlled electric shock that stops a chaotic heart rhythm, giving the heart a chance to pick up a normal one. An automated external defibrillator reads the rhythm through the pads and only shocks when a shock will help. The ZOLL AED 3 and the LIFEPAK CR2 4G Cellular both do that on their own, and both are $2,895.

Coaches the compressions as well as the shock

The AED 3 suits a workplace where the rescuer will be doing CPR for several minutes before help arrives: a warehouse, a plant room, a large office floor or a council depot. It talks and listens the whole way through.

  • Nobody has to decide about the shockIt is fully automatic. The unit reads the rhythm, warns everyone to stand clear and delivers the shock itself, so there is no button for a shaken bystander to hesitate over.
  • The rescuer is told how the CPR is goingReal CPR Help measures each compression and speaks up in real time, which matters because the shock only works alongside decent chest compressions.
  • It gets to the decision quicklyRapid Shock Analysis is ZOLL's name for how the AED 3 assesses the rhythm, so the pause between the pads going on and the unit acting is kept short.
  • One pad set covers adults and childrenThe CPR Uni-padz are universal. For a child you reposition the pads and select child mode, so there is no second pad set to buy, store or find in a hurry.
  • Five years between consumable changesThe battery and the Uni-padz each carry a five-year life, and Wi-Fi reporting through ZOLL PlusTrac means the unit tells you its status. Seven-year warranty.

Analyses without stopping the compressions

The CR2 4G suits sites where the unit lives away from a desk and away from the office network: outdoor cabinets, vehicles, remote depots and multi-site organisations with one person responsible for all of them.

  • The CPR does not have to stop for the analysiscprINSIGHT reads the heart rhythm while chest compressions carry on. After CPR the unit gets to a shock in under 13 seconds.
  • Feedback on depth as well as rhythmcprCOACH prompts the rescuer on technique and on how deep the compressions are going, which is the part most people get wrong under pressure.
  • A shock sized to the patientAdult energy is configurable from 150 to 360 joules. A child mode button drops it to between 35 and 90 joules for a child aged 1 to 8 or under 25 kg, with no pad change.
  • It reports in without a site network4G cellular and Wi-Fi connect it to LIFELINKcentral: expiry tracking, a notification the moment it is used or needs service, geolocation and an alert if it is moved. Data is stored in Australia.
  • Rated for dusty and damp cornersIP55 means dust is kept out and water sprayed from any direction will not stop it. At 2 kg, with an eight-year warranty, it carries easily to the patient.

How each unit handles defibrillation and the CPR around it

The shock itself and the compressions around it lead this table, because that is the whole job. Neither unit wins outright. They are built for different sites.

Where each unit earns its keep

The choice comes down to who will be kneeling beside the patient and where the unit has to live. Three situations cover most of the calls we take.

The warehouse with one first aider on shift

An ambulance takes time to reach a loading dock, and the person who starts CPR may be on their own with it for several minutes. Compressions fade fast when nobody is checking them.

Choose the ZOLL AED 3. Real CPR Help speaks up on each compression, so the rescuer is corrected as they go rather than afterwards.

The depot, vehicle or outdoor cabinet

There is no site Wi-Fi to join, nobody walks past the unit daily, and dust and damp are part of the job. A unit nobody checks is a unit nobody can trust.

Choose the LIFEPAK CR2 4G. It reports readiness over 4G with no network to join, flags its own expiry dates, and IP55 handles the dust and spray.

The sports club with juniors on the ground

Adults and children use the same grounds on the same weekend, and whoever grabs the unit will not want to hunt through a cupboard for a second set of pads.

Choose the LIFEPAK CR2 4G. A child mode button lowers the shock for a child aged 1 to 8 or under 25 kg without changing pads or opening anything else.

Still mapping the range? Our AEDs page walks through every unit we stock and who each one suits, while the portable defibrillator page covers the units built to travel. Our biphasic vs monophasic defibrillator page goes further into the waveform behind the shock.

Why buy from Integrity HS

A defibrillator is not something to buy from a catalogue and never hear about again. Here is what comes with it.

Advice from people who have used these devices

Liam Harte and Brad Goodwin founded Integrity HS as intensive care paramedics who served with the Australian Defence Force. Ring to ask what actually happens in the first four minutes and that is who you get.

Questions people ask before they buy

What actually happens during defibrillation?

Two pads go on the bare chest and the defibrillator reads the heart rhythm through them. If the rhythm is one a shock can correct, the unit charges, warns everyone to stand clear and passes a controlled current across the heart. That brief pause lets the heart pick up an organised rhythm again. Chest compressions carry on either side of the shock.

Does a defibrillator shock every collapsed person?

No. The unit analyses the rhythm first and only shocks when a shock is the right treatment. If it is not, the AED says so and tells the rescuer to keep doing chest compressions. That is why you can put an AED in the hands of an untrained person: it will not deliver a shock that is not called for.

Do you have to stop CPR while the unit analyses?

With most AEDs the rescuer stands clear for a few seconds while the unit reads the rhythm. The LIFEPAK CR2 4G is the exception here: cprINSIGHT analyses while compressions continue, and once CPR stops the unit reaches a shock in under 13 seconds. The ZOLL AED 3 uses Rapid Shock Analysis to keep that check short, then coaches the compressions with Real CPR Help.

What does a workplace defibrillator cost to buy and run?

Both units on this page are $2,895, with free shipping. Running costs are the consumables. The ZOLL AED 3 battery is $226 and its CPR Uni-padz are $226, each lasting five years. The LIFEPAK CR2 battery is $325.82 and its pads are $178, each lasting four years. Call 1300 720 024 for quantity pricing.

Can the same unit be used on a child?

Yes. Both units treat adults and children. On the LIFEPAK CR2 4G a child mode button lowers the shock to between 35 and 90 joules for a child aged 1 to 8 or under 25 kg, using the same pads. On the ZOLL AED 3 the CPR Uni-padz are universal: you reposition them and select child mode. Neither needs a separate paediatric pad set.
