Semi automatic defibrillators

A semi automatic defibrillator leaves the shock button in trained hands

The unit reads the heart and charges itself. A person presses the button when it says so.

Most people asking us for a semi automatic defibrillator have been sent by a policy or a trainer. Their emergency procedure names a trained officer as the person who decides on a shock, or their crew learned on a unit with a button and wants the same one on the wall. Then they open our shop and every listing says fully automatic. Integrity HS was founded by intensive care paramedics, so here is the plain version, and how to order the build you want.

What is a semi automatic defibrillator?

A semi automatic defibrillator analyses the heart rhythm, charges itself, then tells the rescuer to press a flashing shock button. The machine still decides whether a shock is needed. Integrity HS lists the HeartSine Samaritan 500P at $2,065 as a semi automatic unit, and the ZOLL AED Plus is available semi automatic on request.

Semi automatic straight off the shelf

The 500P suits a site with named first aid officers who refresh their training. HeartSine describes it as a semi automatic unit, so you order it online at the listed price rather than ringing to arrange a variant, and it coaches the compressions while the rescuer works.

  • The last step belongs to your first aiderIt reads the rhythm, charges, warns everyone to stand clear, then asks the rescuer to press shock. That matches a procedure written around a trained person.
  • It tells you when to push harderCPR Advisor reads blood flow through the pads using an impedance cardiogram, then says "Push harder" or confirms good compressions. Few units judge the compressions themselves.
  • One part to reorder, one date to watchThe Pad-Pak cartridge holds the battery and the electrodes together with a four-year life and a single expiry date, so nothing gets tracked on two separate lists.
  • Light enough to carry to the patient1.1 kg and 20 x 18.4 x 4.8 cm per the manufacturer datasheet. IP56 means it is sealed against dust and against water sprayed from any direction.
  • Eight years of cover, and it checks itselfThe manufacturer warranty runs eight years. A System Status Ready Indicator flashes to show the unit is ready, backed by a weekly self-check.

ZOLL AED Plus Fully Automatic Defibrillator

Listed fully automatic, semi automatic on request

The AED Plus suits a team that drills. Its pads carry a sensor that measures how deep each compression goes and shows it on a bar gauge, which is why trainers like it. The listing is the fully automatic SKU, and ZOLL builds the same unit semi automatic to order.

  • Ordered semi automatic by phoneThe product page says the AED Plus is also available in Semi Automatic. No price is published for that build, so ring 1300 720 024 and we will quote it.
  • You can see how deep the compressions areReal CPR Help uses a sensor in the one-piece CPR-D-padz to drive a real-time depth bar gauge, with audio and text prompts alongside it.
  • A metronome that keeps up with youAn adaptive metronome guides the rescuer to at least 100 compressions a minute and adjusts as the pace drifts.
  • It arrives ready to mountThe box holds the CPR-D-padz adult electrodes, ten lithium batteries, the manual, a BLS wall poster, an instructional DVD and a soft carry case.
  • Seven years of cover on a long-serving designA seven-year manufacturer warranty, with five years on the battery and pads. The AED Plus has been on the market since 2002.

Two semi automatic defibrillator options side by side

How you get the semi automatic build leads, because that is the part the shop listings hide. Neither unit is better than the other. They fit different teams.

Where a shock button is the right call

Think about who is realistically going to be kneeling beside the patient. That answers this question faster than any spec does.

The workplace with a first aid roster

You have named first aid officers, they refresh their CPR every year, and your emergency procedure says a trained person makes the call on a shock. The unit needs to fit that procedure rather than cut across it.

Choose the 500P. It is semi automatic as listed, so there is nothing to arrange, and CPR Advisor coaches the compressions while your officer works.

The team that drills and wants to get better

Your crew practises on a manikin twice a year and the honest problem is compression depth. People push too softly under pressure and nobody in the room can tell by eye.

Choose the ZOLL AED Plus. The depth bar gauge shows each compression as it happens, which turns a drill into feedback rather than guesswork.

The lobby where anyone might be first

A visitor, a casual on their first shift or a passer-by could be the one who opens the cabinet. Asking a frightened stranger to press a button adds a real delay.

Choose the ZOLL AED Plus. The build we list is fully automatic, so it shocks by itself after warning everyone to stand clear, and nobody has to decide.

Still weighing the two modes up? Our fully automatic vs semi automatic defibrillator page sets them side by side, the ZOLL AED Plus semi vs fully automatic page covers that one model in detail, and our portable defibrillator page looks at units built to travel.

What buyers ask us about the shock button

What does semi automatic mean on a defibrillator?

It means the rescuer presses the shock button. The unit still does the clinical work: it reads the heart rhythm through the pads, decides whether a shock will help and charges itself. Then it warns everyone to stand clear and asks the person holding it to press a flashing button. A fully automatic unit does that last step on its own.

Which defibrillators are available semi automatic in Australia?

The HeartSine Samaritan 500P with CPR Advisor is described by HeartSine as a semi automatic unit and is listed that way in our shop. The HeartSine 360P, ZOLL AED Plus, ZOLL AED 3, all three LIFEPAK CR2 versions and the Mindray C1A each say on their product page that a semi automatic version is also available. Call 1300 720 024 to order one.

How much does a semi automatic defibrillator cost?

The HeartSine Samaritan 500P is $2,065, down from $2,695, with free shipping. That is the one semi automatic unit with a published price. Every other semi automatic build is quoted rather than listed, because the shop carries the fully automatic SKU. Ring 1300 720 024 with the model you want and we will price it, including quantity pricing.

Why would a workplace choose semi automatic over fully automatic?

Usually because a written procedure names a trained first aid officer as the person who acts, and the equipment is expected to match it. Trained responders also tend to prefer the button, because they can look up and confirm nobody is touching the patient before the shock goes in. Where the rescuer is more likely to be an untrained bystander, fully automatic is the kinder choice.

Can a semi automatic defibrillator be used on a child?

Yes, and both units here treat adults and children. The HeartSine 500P takes a Paediatric-Pak in place of the adult Pad-Pak for a child aged 1 to 8 or under 25 kg, which delivers 50 joules. The ZOLL AED Plus takes Pedi-padz II for a child under 8 or under 25 kg, at $113, and the unit switches to its paediatric algorithm.
