ZOLL AED Plus vs ZOLL AED 3: what the extra $600 actually buys

Both coach your CPR and carry a seven-year warranty. Only one of them reports in by Wi-Fi.

ZOLL AED Plus fully automatic defibrillator supplied in its soft carry case
The ZOLL AED Plus, on the market since 2002 and supplied with a soft carry case.

Two units from the same maker, both fully automatic, $600 apart. The ZOLL AED Plus vs ZOLL AED 3 question usually starts with a worry that the cheaper unit is the obsolete one, and that buying it now means buying again in a few years. It is not. Both are current, both are sold new with a seven-year warranty, and both give the rescuer live feedback on their compressions. What separates them is how the unit is looked after between rescues, and how it handles a child.

What is the difference between the ZOLL AED Plus and the ZOLL AED 3?

Both are fully automatic, give Real CPR Help feedback on every compression and carry a seven-year warranty with five years on consumables. The AED 3 adds Wi-Fi readiness reporting to ZOLL PlusTrac, Rapid Shock Analysis and one universal pad set for adults and children. The AED Plus costs $600 less and runs on ten 123A lithium batteries.

ZOLL AED Plus Fully Automatic Defibrillator

The long-serving unit, and the cheaper one to own

The AED Plus suits a single site where one person is responsible for the kit and happy to check it: an office, a workshop, a café, a community hall, or a business already running AED Plus units that wants the spares to match.

  • It tells the rescuer to push harderReal CPR Help reads each compression through a sensor in the pad, shows the depth on a bar gauge and sets the rhythm with a metronome at 100 compressions a minute or faster.
  • Five years on a set of ordinary batteriesIt runs on ten 123A lithium cells that last five years in the unit. A sleeve of ten is $112.20, the lowest battery cost in our range.
  • One piece of pad, placed in one movementThe CPR-D-padz is a single sheet that lays out in one go, so there is no second pad to peel, position or get the wrong way round. Five-year shelf life, $190.
  • Ready to mount on the day it landsIt arrives with the CPR-D-padz fitted, ten batteries, the manual, a basic life support wall poster, an instructional DVD and a soft carry case.
  • Proven since 2002, covered for seven yearsThis model has been in service for more than two decades. The manufacturer warranty runs seven years, with five years on the battery and pads.

ZOLL AED 3 Fully Automatic Defibrillator

The connected model, with one pad set for everyone

The AED 3 suits the buyer who will not be standing next to the unit: several sites, an unattended cabinet, a school or a childcare centre, or any workplace where nobody has been given the job of checking a defibrillator every month.

  • It reports its own readinessProgram Management Onboard sends self-test results over Wi-Fi to ZOLL PlusTrac, so the status of every unit shows on one screen and no walk-round inspections are needed.
  • Adults and children on the same padsThe CPR Uni-padz covers both. For a child you reposition the pads and select child mode, so there is no separate paediatric set to store or replace.
  • Less waiting once the pads are onRapid Shock Analysis gets to the decision quickly, and Real CPR Help then gives audible feedback on each compression while the rescuer works.
  • Five years between consumable changesThe sealed battery has a five-year installed life at $226, and the Uni-padz has a five-year shelf life at $226, supplied with a rescue accessory kit.
  • The same seven years of coverSeven-year manufacturer warranty, five years on the battery and pads, in a 2.5 kg unit measuring 24.7 x 23.6 x 12.7 cm.

ZOLL AED Plus vs ZOLL AED 3 on the specs that actually differ

Monitoring and paediatric pads lead, because those are the two rows that change how the unit is owned. Further down the table the two units converge.

Where each ZOLL unit earns its keep

The ZOLL AED Plus vs ZOLL AED 3 decision follows the building and the people in it, not the release date. Three situations cover most of the calls we take about these two.

One site, one person who owns the kit

A workshop, office or hall where the first aid officer already checks the kit, signs the register and would notice a warning beep. Remote monitoring would report to the person who is standing in front of the unit anyway.

Choose the AED Plus. The $600 saved buys familiarisation training for the team, and the consumables are the cheapest we stock.

A school, childcare centre or swim club

Children are on site every day, and the second pad set is the thing that gets forgotten. Paediatric electrodes carry a shorter shelf life than adult ones, so they expire while the unit still reads as ready.

Choose the AED 3. One universal Uni-padz set covers adults and children, so there is one expiry date and one part to reorder.

Several sites and nobody assigned to check them

Units live in branch offices, outdoor cabinets or sites visited once a quarter. The honest answer, on most fleets we audit, is that nobody knows which unit is closest to an expiry date.

Choose the AED 3. Wi-Fi reporting to PlusTrac puts every unit on one screen, so a flat battery is an alert rather than a discovery.

If your site already runs AED Plus units, staying with the Plus keeps one set of spares on the shelf, and our ZOLL defibrillator pads page explains which pad fits which unit. Prefer to press the shock button yourself? See ZOLL AED Plus semi vs fully automatic. For a lighter option, our ZOLL vs Elliot page puts the AED 3 beside the smallest unit we stock.

Questions buyers ask about these two ZOLL units

Has the ZOLL AED 3 replaced the AED Plus?

No. The AED Plus has been on the market since 2002 and is still sold new, with the same seven-year manufacturer warranty as the AED 3 and its own current battery and pad range. Integrity HS stocks consumables for both. The AED 3 is the newer design, not a replacement, and the two are bought for different reasons.

Can the ZOLL AED Plus and AED 3 share batteries or pads?

No, they use different consumables. The AED Plus takes ten 123A lithium batteries and the one-piece CPR-D-padz, which is listed for the AED Plus only. The AED 3 takes a sealed lithium manganese dioxide battery and the CPR Uni-padz. If you run both models, order and store the two sets separately so the wrong pad never ends up in the cabinet.

Which ZOLL defibrillator costs less to keep ready?

The AED Plus. Both units run on a five-year consumable cycle, so the comparison is straightforward. A sleeve of ten 123A batteries is $112.20 and a CPR-D-padz is $190, which is $302.20 for the AED Plus. The AED 3 battery is $226 and the Uni-padz is $226, which is $452.

Do both ZOLL units work on a child?

Yes, in two different ways. The AED 3 uses one universal CPR Uni-padz set: you reposition the pads and select child mode. The AED Plus needs the separate ZOLL Pedi-padz II electrodes, $113, for a child under 8 years or under 25 kg, and the unit then switches to its paediatric algorithm. Those pads carry a two-year shelf life.

Are these ZOLL models available as semi automatic?

Yes. The units listed in our shop are fully automatic, which means they deliver the shock themselves after warning everyone to stand clear. Semi automatic versions of both, where the rescuer presses the shock button when told to, are available on request. No price is published for those, so call Integrity HS on 1300 720 024 and we will quote you.
