ZOLL vs LIFEPAK defibrillator: pick the one your sites can keep ready

Both report in over Wi-Fi. They differ in how they help during CPR and what the refills cost.

Once a defibrillator is on a wall in a building you rarely visit, the hard part is not buying it. It is knowing, twelve months later, that the battery is still good and the pads have not expired. That is why the ZOLL vs LIFEPAK defibrillator question usually comes from a facilities or safety manager rather than a first aider, and why the answer turns on reporting and refill cycles rather than on the shock itself. Integrity HS sells both, so here is the honest comparison.

What is the difference between a ZOLL and a LIFEPAK defibrillator?

The ZOLL AED 3 and the LIFEPAK CR2 WIFI both report their readiness over Wi-Fi. The 2.5 kg AED 3 coaches each compression through a sensor in its pads, and its battery and pads last five years under a seven-year warranty. The 2 kg CR2 reads the heart rhythm while compressions continue, and carries an eight-year warranty with four-year consumables.

ZOLL AED 3 Fully Automatic Defibrillator

Coaches the rescuer through the compressions

The AED 3 suits places where the person who responds will not be a trained first aider, and where someone back at head office needs to see that every unit is still ready. Gyms, clubs, retail floors and multi-building sites.

  • It tells the rescuer if the compressions are good enoughReal CPR Help measures each push through a sensor built into the pads and gives audible feedback while it is happening, so a frightened bystander is not guessing.
  • One set of pads covers adults and childrenThe CPR Uni-padz are a single universal set. For a child you reposition the pads and select child mode, so there is no second pad set sitting in a drawer expiring.
  • Nobody has to press shockIt is fully automatic. It analyses the rhythm with Rapid Shock Analysis, warns everyone to stand clear and delivers the shock itself when one is needed.
  • Five years between refills, not fourThe $226 battery has a five-year installed life and the $226 Uni-padz a five-year shelf life, so a site reorders once every five years instead of every four.
  • Status reaches you without a site visitProgram Management Onboard connects over Wi-Fi to ZOLL PlusTrac, and ZOLL states the unit needs no maintenance inspections. Seven-year warranty, five years on the battery and pads.

LIFEPAK CR2 WIFI Fully Automatic Defibrillator

Keeps the compressions going during analysis

The CR2 WIFI suits noisy or busy workplaces, and sites where children are present. Workshops, warehouses, schools, childcare centres and offices where a first aid officer is likely to be the one holding it.

  • Nobody has to stop pushing on the chestcprINSIGHT reads the heart rhythm while chest compressions carry on, so the rescuer is not asked to stand back and wait while the unit makes up its mind.
  • A child mode button instead of a pad changePress the child button for a child aged 1 to 8 or under 25 kg and the unit drops to a lower shock energy. The same pads stay on the chest.
  • Still audible on a loud factory floorClearVoice listens to the background noise and lifts its own volume to suit, which matters when machinery, traffic or a crowd is drowning out the prompts.
  • Pads you can change in secondsThe QUIK-STEP electrodes peel straight off the base of the unit, so a replacement after a rescue or an expiry date takes moments rather than a service call.
  • Eight years of cover on a 2 kg unitAn eight-year manufacturer warranty, Wi-Fi status updates to LIFELINKcentral, and an IP55 rating, which means dust is kept out and sprayed water will not stop it.

CPR support and reporting lead, because that is where these two genuinely part company. Neither unit wins outright. They are built for different buildings and different rescuers.

Where each connected unit earns its keep

Picture the room and the person who will reach for it. Three situations cover nearly every call we take on this pair.

Twenty units across buildings you rarely visit

One person owns the compliance register for the whole portfolio, and driving to every foyer to read an indicator light is not a plan. What you need is a screen that tells you which unit has a problem.

Choose the ZOLL AED 3. Program Management Onboard reports to PlusTrac over Wi-Fi, and ZOLL states no maintenance inspections are needed.

A workshop, warehouse or plant room

Machinery is running, forklifts are moving, and voice prompts get lost in it. The unit also has to survive dust and the occasional hosing down when the floor gets cleaned.

Choose the LIFEPAK CR2 WIFI. ClearVoice raises its volume to beat the background noise, and the IP55 seal keeps dust and sprayed water out.

A school, childcare centre or family venue

The patient could be a five-year-old or a grandparent at pickup time, and the responder is a staff member with a first aid certificate and a lot of people watching.

Choose the LIFEPAK CR2 WIFI. A child button on the unit switches to a lower energy shock with no pad swap, which is one less step to remember.

Still opening the field up? Our Mindray vs ZOLL page puts the AED 3 against a 4G connected unit, and our LIFEPAK vs Elliot page weighs the CR2 against the lightest defibrillator we stock. Our LIFEPAK CR2 4G vs WIFI page covers the connectivity choice inside the CR2 range.

Questions buyers ask us about these two brands

Which is better, a ZOLL or a LIFEPAK defibrillator?

Neither is better across the board, and any supplier who says otherwise is guessing at your site. The ZOLL AED 3 is the choice where an untrained bystander will be doing the compressions, because it coaches them out loud. The LIFEPAK CR2 WIFI is the choice where noise, children or a trained first aid team are the deciding factors.

What does the Wi-Fi in these defibrillators actually do?

It sends the results of the unit's own self-tests to a management system, so you learn about a flat battery or an expiring pad from a dashboard instead of from a walk around the building. The ZOLL AED 3 reports to ZOLL PlusTrac through Program Management Onboard. The LIFEPAK CR2 WIFI sends status updates to LIFELINKcentral.

Do the ZOLL AED 3 and LIFEPAK CR2 cost the same to run?

No, and the gap is in the cycle as much as the price. The ZOLL AED 3 battery is $226 and the CPR Uni-padz $226, both lasting five years. The LIFEPAK CR2 battery is $325.82 and its replacement pads $178, both on a four-year cycle. Over eight years that is two ZOLL refills against two LIFEPAK refills at a higher battery price.

Can a ZOLL or LIFEPAK defibrillator be used on a child?

Yes, both are made for adults and children. The ZOLL AED 3 uses one universal set of CPR Uni-padz: you reposition the pads on the child and select child mode. The LIFEPAK CR2 WIFI has a child mode button on the unit that lowers the shock energy for a child aged 1 to 8 or under 25 kg, with no pad change at all.

Are these units available in semi automatic?

Yes. The versions listed in our shop are fully automatic, which means the unit delivers the shock itself. Semi automatic versions of both, where the rescuer presses the shock button after the unit tells them to, are available on request. No price is published for those, so call Integrity HS on 1300 720 024 and we will quote you.
