Paediatric pads

Adult vs paediatric defibrillator pads: when a child needs a different set

Some units switch to a child setting with one button. Others need a smaller pad set. Here is which.

The HeartSine Pad-Pak 04. Battery and child-sized electrodes in one cartridge.

The question usually arrives from a school office, a childcare centre or a parent who has just bought a defibrillator for the house. The unit on the wall says it is for adults, the children are in the next room, and nobody is sure whether it can be used on an eight-year-old without buying something extra. The adult vs paediatric defibrillator pads question has two honest answers, and which one applies depends entirely on the model you own. For some units a child needs a separate pad set. For others, pressing one button does the same job with the pads already fitted. Here is the split across the range Integrity HS stocks.

Do children need different defibrillator pads?

Paediatric pads deliver a lower energy shock to a child aged 1 to 8 or under 25 kg. HeartSine Samaritan units need a separate Pad-Pak 04 and the ZOLL AED Plus needs Pedi-padz II. The HeartHero Elliot, LIFEPAK CR2, ZOLL AED 3 and Mindray C1A switch to a child setting with their standard pads fitted.

HeartSine Samaritan Paediatric Pad-Pak 04

For the HeartSine 350P, 360P and 500P

The Pad-Pak 04 suits anyone who owns a HeartSine Samaritan and has children around it regularly: primary schools, early learning centres, swim schools, junior sport clubs and family homes. It is how these units deliver a child-sized shock.

  • Battery and pads in one swapThe Pad-Pak 04 holds the battery and the child electrodes in a single cartridge. Slide the adult Pad-Pak out, slide this one in, and the unit is set for a child.
  • A shock sized for a small chestEvery shock is 50 joules, according to the manufacturer datasheet, against 150, 150 and 200 joules from the adult Pad-Pak.
  • Four years on the shelf, one date to checkThe cartridge lasts four years and carries a single expiry date, so the spare in the cabinet needs one glance a year, not two.
  • Fits every Samaritan model we stockThe 350P, the 360P and the 500P all take the same Pad-Pak 04, so a site with a mix of HeartSine units keeps one spare.
  • Made for children aged 1 to 8 or under 25 kgThat is the range the product page gives, so the decision on the day is a quick age or weight check rather than a judgement call.
ZOLL Pedi-padz II paediatric electrodes for the ZOLL AED Plus

ZOLL Pedi-padz II Paediatric Electrodes

For the ZOLL AED Plus

The Pedi-padz II suit a ZOLL AED Plus that lives somewhere children gather: a school hall, a community centre, a sports club with junior teams, a church. The AED Plus ships with adult CPR-D-padz, so this is the second set that makes the unit ready for a child.

  • The unit recognises a child on its ownConnect the Pedi-padz II and the AED Plus switches to its paediatric algorithm automatically. There is no child button to find in the moment.
  • Made for children under 8 or under 25 kgThe product page sets the range, so the rescuer only has to know roughly how old or how heavy the child is.
  • A low-cost second setAt $113, adding child cover to an AED Plus costs a fraction of the unit. The adult CPR-D-padz are $190.
  • A replacement cycle you can plan forPedi-padz II have a two-year shelf life, shorter than the five years on the adult set, so note the date on the pack and reorder on schedule.
  • Matched to the AED Plus onlyThe product page lists them for the AED Plus. A ZOLL AED 3 does not need them, because its Uni-padz already cover adults and children.

Adult vs paediatric defibrillator pads: the two child sets we stock

Fit and age range lead, because a paediatric set only helps if it matches the unit on your wall. Neither is better than the other. Each exists for one brand.

Which one do you need

Start with the model on your wall. Three situations cover nearly every call we take about adult vs paediatric defibrillator pads.

You own a HeartSine and children are around

A primary school, a childcare centre or a home with a 360P or 500P in the hallway. The adult Pad-Pak is fitted and you want the unit ready for the youngest person in the building.

Choose the Pad-Pak 04. Keep it in the carry case beside the unit. Swapping cartridges takes seconds and the unit sets itself to 50 joule shocks.

You own a ZOLL AED Plus at a shared venue

A sports club, a community hall or a church where junior teams train and families gather. The unit came with adult CPR-D-padz and nothing for a child.

Choose the Pedi-padz II. Store them with the unit. Plugging them in tells the AED Plus to use its paediatric algorithm, and at $113 they are the least expensive cover on this page.

You own an Elliot, LIFEPAK CR2, ZOLL AED 3 or Mindray C1A

You have read that children need special pads and are about to order a second set. For these four units you do not need to.

Choose nothing extra. The Elliot, CR2 and Mindray C1A drop to a child energy at the press of a button, using the pads already fitted. The AED 3's Uni-padz cover adults and children; you reposition the pads and select child mode.

Replacing an adult set instead? Our HeartSine Pad-Pak page covers the adult cartridge and which units it fits, our ZOLL defibrillator pads page matches each ZOLL unit to its pads, and our defibrillator pads page covers the wider range.

Questions parents and first aid officers ask us

What is the difference between adult and paediatric defibrillator pads?

Paediatric pads deliver a lower energy shock and are sized for a smaller chest. On a HeartSine Samaritan the Paediatric Pad-Pak 04 gives 50 joule shocks, where the adult Pad-Pak steps through 150, 150 and 200 joules, according to the manufacturer datasheet. On a ZOLL AED Plus, connecting Pedi-padz II switches the unit to its paediatric algorithm. The Pad-Pak 04 is for children aged 1 to 8 or under 25 kg, and the Pedi-padz II for children under 8 or under 25 kg.

Which defibrillators need separate paediatric pads?

Of the units Integrity HS stocks, two families do. The HeartSine Samaritan 350P, 360P and 500P take the Pad-Pak 04, and the ZOLL AED Plus takes Pedi-padz II. The HeartHero Elliot, LIFEPAK CR2 and Mindray C1A switch to a child energy with a button and keep their standard pads fitted. The ZOLL AED 3 uses Uni-padz that cover adults and children; you reposition the pads and select child mode.

How long do paediatric defibrillator pads last?

The HeartSine Pad-Pak 04 lasts four years and carries a single expiry date for the battery and electrodes together. ZOLL Pedi-padz II have a two-year shelf life. For units that do not need a separate child set, the standard pads follow their own cycle: five years for the Elliot pad cartridge, four years for LIFEPAK CR2 pads, and five years for ZOLL AED 3 Uni-padz and Mindray MR62 pads.

Does the HeartSine 500P still coach CPR when the Paediatric Pad-Pak is fitted?

No. The manufacturer datasheet states that CPR Advisor is deactivated while the Paediatric-Pak is in use. The unit still analyses the child's heart rhythm and delivers its 50 joule shocks; what switches off is the push harder and good compressions feedback. The 350P and 360P do not have CPR Advisor in the first place, so nothing changes on those units when the Pad-Pak 04 goes in.

How much do paediatric defibrillator pads cost?

The HeartSine Pad-Pak 04 is $299, which includes the battery as well as the electrodes, and ZOLL Pedi-padz II are $113. If your unit switches to a child setting with a button, there is no separate child set to buy. The Elliot pad cartridge is $199, LIFEPAK CR2 pads are $178, ZOLL AED 3 Uni-padz are $226 and Mindray MR62 pads are $120, each covering adults and children.
