ZOLL vs HeartSine defibrillator: both coach your CPR, in different ways

One weighs 2.5 kg and talks you through every compression. The other is 1.1 kg and semi automatic.

A ZOLL vs HeartSine defibrillator shortlist usually lands on a desk for one reason: someone has been told that good chest compressions matter as much as the shock, and both brands promise to help with them. They go about it in completely different ways, and they sit $830 apart. Integrity HS is Indigenous-owned and was founded by intensive care paramedics, so we talk this one through most weeks.

What is the difference between a ZOLL and a HeartSine defibrillator?

The ZOLL AED 3 weighs 2.5 kg, gives spoken feedback on every compression through its pads, shocks automatically and reports readiness over Wi-Fi. The HeartSine Samaritan 500P weighs 1.1 kg, coaches compressions by measuring blood flow, and asks the rescuer to press shock. Prices are $2,895 and $2,065.

ZOLL AED 3 Fully Automatic Defibrillator

Coaches the rescuer, reports in by itself

The AED 3 suits an organisation that has to prove its defibrillators are ready: multi-site employers, facilities teams and anyone holding a compliance register. It stays on a wall and looks after its own paperwork.

  • It hears every push and says soReal CPR Help senses each compression through the pads and gives the rescuer spoken feedback as they go, so nobody is left guessing whether they are pushing hard enough.
  • One pad set covers adults and childrenThe CPR Uni-padz are universal. For a child you reposition the pads and select child mode, so there is no second cartridge to buy, store or watch the date on.
  • Nobody has to press shockThis is the fully automatic model. Rapid Shock Analysis reads the heart, the unit warns everyone to stand clear and it delivers the shock itself. A semi automatic version is available on request.
  • Checks itself in, so nobody walks the siteProgram Management Onboard connects over Wi-Fi to ZOLL PlusTrac and reports readiness. ZOLL states the unit needs no maintenance inspections, which matters once you hold more than a handful.
  • Five years between consumable changesThe battery has a five-year installed life and the CPR Uni-padz a five-year shelf life, $226 each. The unit itself carries a seven-year warranty.

HeartSine Samaritan 500P with CPR Advisor Defibrillator

Light to carry, coaches on blood flow

The 500P suits a site where a trained person will most likely be first on the scene, and where the unit may have to be carried to the patient: gyms, sports grounds, aged care and larger offices with a first aid roster.

  • Coaching judged on results, not movementCPR Advisor reads the chest through the pads with an impedance cardiogram, a way of sensing blood flow, then calls out "Push harder" or confirms the compressions are working.
  • Light enough to run with1.1 kg, and 20 x 18.4 x 4.8 cm according to the manufacturer datasheet. It comes off a bracket in one hand and crosses a car park without slowing anyone down.
  • The rescuer stays in charge of the shockThe 500P is semi automatic, which means it charges and then asks a person to press the shock button. Trained first aid officers are usually taught on units that work this way.
  • One cartridge, one date to diariseThe Pad-Pak holds the battery and the electrodes together for four years under a single expiry date, $249 for the adult version.
  • Tells you it is ready at a glanceThe System Status Ready Indicator flashes and the unit runs its own check every week. Eight-year manufacturer warranty, and an IP56 rating, meaning dust and sprayed water cannot get in.

ZOLL vs HeartSine defibrillator, side by side

CPR feedback and operation lead, because that is where these two genuinely part company. Weight, children and running costs follow, and neither unit wins the table outright.

Which unit suits your site

Who reaches the patient first, and who has to keep the paperwork straight, settle a ZOLL vs HeartSine defibrillator comparison faster than any spec does. Three situations cover most of the calls we take.

Forty units across a dozen sites

Somebody owns the register, and every unit on it has a battery date, a pad date and a monthly check that is meant to happen. Once the count passes ten, walking around to look at indicator lights stops being realistic.

Choose the ZOLL AED 3. Program Management Onboard reports each unit's readiness over Wi-Fi to PlusTrac, so the register updates without a site visit.

A gym, club or workplace with a first aid roster

Staff refresh their CPR every year and expect to make the call on a shock themselves. The unit may also have to be carried out to a field, a car park or an upstairs office.

Choose the HeartSine 500P. At 1.1 kg it travels easily, and its semi automatic shock button matches the way your people were trained.

A school, childcare centre or family venue

Children are on site every day, and a paediatric cartridge kept in a drawer is one more thing to find under pressure and one more expiry date to track.

Choose the ZOLL AED 3. The CPR Uni-padz cover adults and children on one set, so the change is a pad position and a button, not a swap.

Questions buyers ask about these two units

Which is better, a ZOLL or a HeartSine defibrillator?

Neither is better in general, because they are built for different sites. The ZOLL AED 3 is the one to pick when you hold many units and need them to report their own readiness over Wi-Fi. The HeartSine Samaritan 500P is the one to pick when the unit has to be carried and a trained person will use it. Both coach compressions and both treat adults and children.

How does each unit know whether the compressions are good enough?

They measure different things. ZOLL Real CPR Help senses the movement of each compression through a sensor in the CPR Uni-padz and gives spoken feedback in real time. HeartSine CPR Advisor reads an impedance cardiogram through the same pads, which senses blood flow in the chest, then says "Push harder" or confirms the compressions are working. Both prompt the rescuer while they work.

Does someone have to press the shock button on these defibrillators?

On the HeartSine Samaritan 500P, yes. It is semi automatic, so it analyses the heart, charges and then tells the rescuer to press the shock button. The ZOLL AED 3 we stock is fully automatic and delivers the shock itself after warning everyone to stand clear. ZOLL also make a semi automatic AED 3, available on request, with no published price. Call 1300 720 024.

What do the ZOLL AED 3 and HeartSine 500P cost to keep in service?

The ZOLL AED 3 takes a $226 battery with a five-year installed life and $226 CPR Uni-padz with a five-year shelf life, so two parts on a five-year cycle. The HeartSine 500P takes one Pad-Pak at $249, which holds the battery and electrodes under a single four-year date. Both also need replacing after a rescue.

Can both defibrillators be used on a child?

Yes, and the difference is what you have to keep on hand. The ZOLL AED 3 uses universal CPR Uni-padz for both, so you reposition the pads and select child mode. The HeartSine 500P needs a Paediatric-Pak fitted in place of the adult Pad-Pak, which delivers a lower 50 joule shock for a child aged 1 to 8 or under 25 kg.
